Why does murugan have two wives

The spiritual vibrations are attracted towards these shining idols easily. Importance of Idol worship: Idols are not the idle fancies of sculptors, but shining channels through which the heart of the devotee is attracted to and flows towards God. Though the image is worshipped, the devotee feels the presence of the Lord in it and pours out his devotion unto it. Regular worship, Puja and other modes of demonstrating our inner feeling of recognition of Divinity in the idol unveils the Divinity latent in it.

This is truly a wonder and a miracle. The picture comes to life. The idol speaks. It will answer your questions and solve your problems. The God in you has the power to awaken the latent Divinity in the idol. They proved beyond doubt that idol worship has its own brighter side and through simple faith and intense devotion one can realize God through it.

Idols are the "finite representation of the Infinite". As per Vishnu Samhita ch 29, v , persuasively endorses the use of imagery idols and puts it: "Without a form how can God be mediated upon? If He is without any form, where will the mind fix itself? When there is nothing for the mind to attach itself to, it will slip away from meditation or will glide into a state of slumber.

Therefore the wise will meditate on some form, remembering, however, that the form is a superimposition and not a reality. His Svarupa is Jyotirmaya.

Form of light. When Lord Muruga took the human form, it resulted in his form being created in the same manner. The spirit, signified by the sparks from Siva, created the appearance of a human personality, the body comprising of the five elements. In order to distinguish him from other mortal human beings, he is portrayed with six faces and twelve hands to establish his divine nature. He is also known as Arumuga Six faces for this reason.

The sixth face characterises the spirit that confers life to all beings created by the five elements. One face is shining to remove ignorance and bestow Knowledge; another fulfils the desires of devotees and attends to their needs; a third face bestows strength and inspiration for the performance of rituals and sacrifices; a fourth brings out the inner secrets and helps the seekers of knowledge by revealing those secrets to them; a fifth face has the purpose of protecting the virtuous and punishing the wicked; and the sixth face stands for that function of the Lord that ignites Love and bestows happiness amongst the Jivas.

The consorts of Lord Shanmukha are Valli and Deivayanai. Valli stands for the Iccha Sakti—the Power of Will. Thus should a Jiva aspiring to Godliness, having brought the will-power under control, strive ceaselessly till it reaches the goal.

Glory to the Lord of the Saktis! Glory to the Lord who dispels ignorance amongst the devotees by His Velayudha. The true import of this wedding seems to be this. Valli represents the Jiva that has been separated from its original abode, eternal bliss, Paramatman, who is Lord Subrahmanya. The separated Jiva roams in the wilderness of the forest of this world, due to the force of Avidya ignorance.

The first one is Devasana also called Devayani or Deivanai , the daughter of Lord Indra and his second wife is Valli she was found in a pit, dug out while gathering the edible tubers of the valli-plant , the daughter of a tribal chief. Lord Murugan fulfilled the prayers of both his sincere devotees and demonstrated the power of devotion to the entire world by marrying them both.

There is a regular, formal spiritual path prescribed by the Vedas and the other path is the unconventional path characterized by powerful feelings and emotions towards the Lord just leaving aside the mechanic formalities. Devasena and Valli represent these two types of devotion towards the supreme self. Where Valli took the spiritual way, Devasena chose the path of emotions and passion. Devasena was gifted in marriage to Lord Murugan by Indra after he vanquished the demons.

Devasena was in her previous birth the daughter of Vishnu, the king of Gods, who too did an austere penance to get her wedded to Lord Murugan. The marriage with Devasena happened in the most orthodox way and is described as the Vaidika type of wedding.

And considering that this being Skanda was undoubtedly destined to be the husband of this lady by Brahma himself, he had her brought there, dressed her with the best apparel. Therefore do thou duly accept her lotus-like beautiful right hand with invocation of the marital hymns.

And Vrihaspati learned in hymns performed the necessary prayers and oblations. When Skanda became united to Devasena in indissoluble bonds of matrimony, then the gods of prosperity in her own personal embodiment began to serve him with diligence.

In her earlier birth, Valli was the daughter of Lord Vishnu and she undertook a severe penance to get married to Lord Murugan. Valli represents the Jiva or the soul under the veil of ignorance. Under the guidance of the Guru Narada, the veil of ignorance is torn away and the soul marches towards liberation or Moksha.
