Since this is an original work, I find this very ironic that this is a movie about novel writers. Josh Boone, who also directed The Fault in Our Stars, did a good job directing this movie and i loved how it was filmed. I love the cast performances in this movie. I never thought I would recognize most of these famous actors to participate in this indie movie.
The character development was well done and it affected the overall plot of the movie. This made me care about the characters so much and it gave me the feels as a result. The balance of the narration of the movie is fair enough. This is a movie for all audiences except kids, of course. The romance part was done very well without being too cliched. This movie actually reminded me of Love, Actually, with the family trees and all that. But using three of its family members for the romance part is clever enough.
The production in this movie is simple, without making it too complicated, which gives more praise to the directing. This is one of the few movies I cannot see flaws in. This is an excellent movie. This movie might not be for everybody, I realize, but it reminded me of my parents' divorce and the struggles that each of us has gone through in the process. It did an excellent job of touching my heart and bringing to life the feelings and turmoil we experienced, which also made it a very hard movie to watch.
The characters seemed realistic and the story believable, with the exception of the ending. The ending might anger some of you non-cliche people out there, but I just found it heart-wrenching. It seems appropriate that a film about writers is allowed to write its own pretend happy ending when often times it doesn't happen that way.
That was perhaps the most bitter part of all. Dad still sets a place for Mom at Thanksgiving dinner. Go get some. Rusty writes moony poetry that might win the girl. But Sam? That juggling lets the picture drift into melodrama more than once. It loses track of Sam and Lou, the most interesting characters, which makes their story arc seem more abrupt than the others.
Wolff is an engaging lead, but his story thread is the most maudlin and melodramatic of all. But it works, despite never being graceful or unstuck enough to take flight.
